NAOETSU PORT AND HARBOR OFFICE
Introduction
Naoetsu port is an international trade port which has been created in the center part of the Japan-sea coastal area from Nara-age. These day , the developing of the economic association , particularly the container cargo trade in the entire Japan sea region as such as Korea, China, Russia and southeast Asian area, is remarkable. Its expectations are high now that Naoetsu port will emerge as a port supporting the creation of new age for the entire Japan Sea region. More over, the full line of Joetsu Expressway is on completion in 1999 and it has been possible to reach the Tokyo and Nagoya regions via Nagano. The development of the high-speed traffic system which connects Joetsu area is remarkable. The more reinforcement of the goods movement function which the port of Naoetsu has achieved is demanded. To attempt the stable supply of the electric power to the Nagano prefecture and the Joetsu area and corresponds to the increase of the electric power demand in future, we have created a plan to construct of the LNG thermoelectric power station at Naoetsu port. Therefore, we implement reclamation works for the LNG thermoelectric power station and wharf which will treat trade general cargo and container cargo such as coal and the timber, which is constructed by Niigata Prefectual Government.
History Naoetsu port had been the pivot port of Echigo provincial capital from Nara-ages. It finds that the merchant ships came from Sado and far from Tango (kyoto) from the fable of "Princess Anjyu and Prince Zushioh" in the Heian period. Kenshin Uesugi who was great general of Echigo region resided in the Kasugayama castle and port of Naoetsu was developed by Kenshin's thick protection such as rice, salty salmon and Echigojyofu as the economical commercial port for export. It have been developed as the next biggest city to Kyoto in Hokuriku in the age of civil war.
In Edo period, it became an accumilation place of Kubiki Rice transported to Edo and Kamigata by using the west side sea line, and be distributing center of materials around Japan-sea coastal area and Shinshu area. After Meiji period, the steamships stopped at Naoetsu port, and the domestic trade among the other ports increased.
As advance of factory moved ahead with power supply development backward, the import of raw materials such as raw salt, coal and ore increase every year, and then container ships from Asian countries increased.
Naoetsu port was designated as an "important port" in 1951 with the wish of Niigata prefectural government and Nagano prefectural government. Large scale vessels could be putting into the port because of the division of the Seki river mouse in 1960, and port facilities has developed with these expectations.
In addition to creating long range ferry routes to Hokkaido and Kyushu in recent years, container freight trade to Korea and China is increasing favorably and the yearly volume of total cargo handled at Naoetsu port reached 10 million tons.

Kasugayama is a castle who lived great general "Kenshin Uesugi" in the ages of civil war. There are dry excavation, ruin of structures, mound and big well, and they keep a mountain fort style castle even if 400 years passed now.
There is Rinsen temple where Kenshin studied near by the castle. There are a Kenshin's grave and his treasure house in the yard at the temple.
There are salty hot springs which were discovered during petroleum boring from 700m underground. Unohama hot springs and beach resort are popular with tourist. There are a herb bath, some various style baths, warm swimming pool and view bath with fine view of sunset into japan sea in healthy plaza "Unohama-Marmaid-House". many big lakes, the Lake Asahi which is filled with pure water is famous about the coming flying place of swan. The prefectural city park where total scale is 65 ha will be open soon. It is comfortable area to the people and expectations are rise.
The Takada castle threefold tower restructured again in the Mitunaga Matsudaira age in the end of 17th centuries. Over 3300 cherry trees let us know the advent of spring. Many cherry blossoms mirrored in the moat invite us to a fantasy world in the evening.
